About Schooner BLACKBIRD SailingWe offer day sailing schooner charters in Casco Bay on a traditional schooner yacht in Freeport, Maine just 12 nautical miles northeast of Portland. Our primary sailing times are weekends late June through September. We offer charters by the day or half day or hour for up to six passengers on custom times with a three hour minimum. We do not mix groups so its your private charter. We are located on scenic Casco Bay 5 miles from downtown Freeport. Please provide us as much advanced notice as possible since all our reservations are customized and therefore we do not sail a regular schedule. Come join us for a sail.
BLACKBIRD, built in 1930, is one of the few remaining original schooner yachts designed by legendary American naval architect John G. Alden. She is 43 feet on deck and 54 feet length overall, with a comfortable, large oval varnished cockpit. Sailing an antique Alden Schooner is a unique sailing experience and adventure, a throwback to the age of yachting in the 1920s. Come sail with us and enjoy the beauty, grace and delight only an authentic, traditionally rigged Alden Schooner can bring. |
Who We Are
We are Sandy & Peter Thompson and have been BLACKBIRD's owner for more than a quarter century. We have been sailing since childhood and have logged thousands of nautical miles together throughout the Gulf of Maine and beyond. Peter holds a USCG 50 ton masters license. The vessel is charted by the hour for $200/hr for up to six passengers with a three hour minimum. We do not sail the usual commercial charter fare of two hour trips with mixed groups. We provide a private charter experience where you hire the captain and boat for the time you want, to go where you want, and we take care of the rest. We depart from Paul's Marina in Nearby Merepoint Bay
BLACKBIRD was designed as an offshore family cruising yacht; she is extremely stable, comfortable, and seaworthy. If your interest is learning to sail, navigate, or sailing a traditional wooden vessel, we are happy to provide instruction or lessons. If simply hanging out and enjoying a nice day on the water with friends among the many beautiful islands along the Maine coast is your interest, it would be our pleasure to have you aboard BLACKBIRD.
